The Embassy of Algeria in Bangladesh marked the 71st anniversary of the start of the Glorious Liberation Revolution with a grand ceremony at Le Méridien Dhaka on Saturday.
The event commemorated the historic uprising that began on November 1, 1954, against colonial rule.
Dignitaries, including government officials, academics, civil society leaders, business executives, diplomats, journalists, and students, attended the celebration, underscoring the strong bilateral ties between Algeria and Bangladesh.
The program opened with the national anthems of both nations, followed by a minute of silence in honor of Algeria’s martyrs and a recitation from the Holy Quran.
In his keynote address, Algerian Ambassador H.E. Dr. Abdelouahab Saidani described the revolution as “a timeless symbol of liberty, dignity, and justice.” He paid tribute to the 1.5 million martyrs who sacrificed their lives for independence and emphasized this year’s theme: “Message to Generations.”
“The youth are the torchbearers of our values,” he said, urging new generations worldwide to uphold courage, unity, and selflessness. He also reaffirmed Algeria’s early recognition of Bangladesh’s independence in 1971, calling it a moment of shared solidarity against oppression.
Mr. Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan, Adviser to the Government of Bangladesh, attended as Chief Guest. He praised the Algerian people’s resilience and called for enhanced cooperation in trade, energy, maritime development, education, and culture, highlighting the potential for deeper South-South collaboration.
The event featured speeches by Ms. Ilyna Saidani and Engr. M.A. Rashid, a poetic tribute to the martyrs, a screening of the documentary The Algerian Revolution and the New Algeria, and cultural performances reflecting Algeria’s rich heritage.
The evening concluded with a symbolic cake-cutting, celebrating freedom, friendship, and the enduring legacy of one of Africa’s most significant liberation movements.
