Students block Farmgate for safer roads

Students, mostly from Government Science College in Tejgaon, have blocked Farmgate area demanding justice and road safety reforms after one of their fellow classmates was killed after a truck ran him over near the area.
At about 11:30AM, under the banner of United Students Alliance, the students went to Farmgate in procession and blocked the road, halting traffic in that area.
It was learnt that two days ago, a student named Sifat was run over by a truck in Farmgate area.Their demands include exemplary punishment for those responsible for death.
Ibne Mizan, Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said that the students had blocked the road for nearly two hours. ”We requested them to leave the road. They demanded a fair trial and the abolition of any illegal parking on roads.”
”We are working to arrest the culprits, police official added.
Their demands include: justice for Sifat and a public apology from the administration for labeling protesting students as ‘terrorists.’ They also called for clearing footpaths of illegal shops, temporary structures, unauthorized markets and street dwellers.
Due to their protest programme, traffic was halted from Bijoy Sarani to Sonargaon intersection.
