Bangladesh fought back to earn a 1-1 draw against ten-man Hong Kong in their AFC Asian Cup Qualifier, with Rakib Hossain scoring a composed equaliser late in the game.
In the 73rd minute, Hong Kong were reduced to ten men. A rough challenge on Shamit Shome near the midfield touchline prompted the Japanese referee to issue a second yellow card, sending the Hong Kong player off.
Taking advantage of the numerical superiority, Bangladesh pushed forward with intent and found the breakthrough in the 83rd minute.
Substitute Fahim Ahmed whipped in a cross from the left wing, which Fahmidul Islam smartly headed down into the path of Rakib Hossain.
Rakib made no mistake, placing the ball past the goalkeeper with composure to bring Bangladesh level.
The equaliser brought new life to the match, but despite late efforts, neither side could find a winner.
Earlier, the match started well for Bangladesh, with the team managing to hold off Hong Kong’s attacks in front of a 50,000-strong home crowd.
However, defender Tariq Kazi committed a foul from behind on Hong Kong forward Fernando. The Japanese referee awarded a penalty to Hong Kong and showed Tariq a yellow card.
Matthew stepped up to take the penalty and confidently converted it, giving the hosts the lead.
