Diane Keaton, the beloved and iconic actress whose career spanned more than five decades, has died at the age of 79 in California, her family confirmed.
Details of her death have not been made public, and her loved ones have requested privacy.
Keaton rose to fame with her Oscar-winning performance in Annie Hall (1977), a role inspired by her own life and created by her former partner Woody Allen. She became known for her sharp comedic timing, distinctive fashion sense and bold choices in dramatic roles.
Her film debut came in The Godfather (1972) as Kay Adams, the wife of Al Pacino’s Michael Corleone; a role she reprised in the acclaimed sequels.
Keaton earned three other Oscar nominations for Reds (1981), Marvin’s Room (1996) and Something’s Gotta Give (2003). Other standout films included The First Wives Club, Baby Boom, Father of the Bride and Book Club.
Though she never married, Keaton adopted two children and often spoke about the transformative experience of motherhood. She also cared for her mother during her battle with Alzheimer’s and chronicled her life in memoirs.
Outside of acting, Keaton was a published author, photographer, home renovator and entrepreneur, lending her name to fashion and lifestyle brands.
In 2017, she received a lifetime achievement award from American Film Institute.
Her final screen appearance was likely in Book Club: The Next Chapter (2023), followed by her first single release, a holiday track titled First Christmas, in late 2024.
Keaton leaves behind a legacy as one of Hollywood’s most original and enduring talents.
