BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday (23 September) dismissed as “fake and fabricated” an interview published in his name by Kolkata-based outlet Ei Samay, claiming the report was generated using artificial intelligence (AI).
“That news is fake! They [Ei Samay] used AI to create this false and misleading report,” Fakhrul told UNB over phone from New York, where he is attending the 80th session of the UN General Assembly with Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus.
He stressed that no political leader could have made the “absurd” comments attributed to him, adding that he had not spoken to any Kolkata-based media.
Earlier, the BNP issued a statement rejecting the interview as “misrepresented and misleading.” It said Fakhrul never made the remarks attributed to him but did not specify which ones were inaccurate.
“As a senior political leader, Fakhrul never makes frivolous statements,” the party statement said.
What Ei Samay reported
On Sunday, Ei Samay published a report titled “Why is India putting BNP and Jamaat in the same bracket? asks Mirza”, claiming its correspondent interviewed Fakhrul in Dhaka.
The report quoted Fakhrul as saying Awami League and Jatiya Party should take part in the national election for a free and fair vote, and that BNP would not allow Jamaat to “climb on its shoulders” anymore in seat-sharing negotiations.
Jamaat, NCP react strongly
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar condemned Fakhrul’s alleged remarks, calling them “false, disrespectful and vindictive.”
“If these remarks are indeed his, we are compelled to voice our protest and condemnation,” Porwar said in a statement.
Meanwhile, at a press conference at NCP’s Banglamotor office, party convener Nahid Islam warned BNP against “rehabilitating the Awami League,” saying such a move would spell disaster.
“BNP should focus on building a new Bangladesh through justice and reforms, which will win the support of the youth,” Nahid said.
NCP Chief Organiser (North) Sarjis Alam also condemned the alleged remarks, accusing BNP of risking betrayal of public trust. “We want to know if they intend to negotiate with India, please the Awami League, or align with Jatiya Party to return to power in the new Bangladesh,” Sarjis said at a rally in Shahbagh.
