The European Union (EU) is ready to work with Bangladesh’s next elected government and stresses the need for swift reforms to ensure a smooth democratic transition, EU Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller said on Monday.
Speaking at a discussion organized by the Association of Former Ambassadors (AOFA) at the Foreign Service Academy, Miller highlighted the aspirations of Bangladesh’s youth and called for collective efforts by political parties, civil society, and development partners to fulfill these ambitions.
“Bangladesh is moving toward a political transition. The EU is committed to supporting the interim government in facilitating a free and fair election next February. Timely reforms and political consensus are crucial for strengthening democracy,” Miller said.
The ambassador emphasized the importance of stability for foreign investment, noting that European investors seek a secure and predictable environment. He also highlighted that the foundation of Bangladesh-EU relations lies in human rights, development, democracy, and freedom of expression, and pledged continued collaboration in these areas.
Miller discussed labor migration opportunities, closer security cooperation—particularly strengthening the Coast Guard—and military collaboration. On the Rohingya issue, he reiterated EU support for voluntary and peaceful repatriation of refugees to Myanmar.
