BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday said discussions with Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus were “fruitful,” adding that the interim government has assured elections will be held in the first half of February.
Speaking to reporters after emerging from the meeting at the state guest house Jamuna, Fakhrul said, “The Chief Adviser has assured us that the national election will take place in early February. BNP expects that the polls will be held as per his commitment.”
He clarified that no discussion took place regarding a possible ban on the Jatiya Party.
On the recent attack on Gono Odhikar Parishad chief Nurul Haque Nur, Fakhrul termed it “heinous and concerning.”
He said, “This must be properly investigated. It appears that some vested quarters carried out such an incident with the aim of delaying the election.”
When asked about Jamaat-e-Islami’s criticism that the Chief Adviser’s London meeting with BNP’s top leadership proved government weakness, Fakhrul responded, “The Chief Adviser met the head of a major political party in London. He has the jurisdiction to sit with any political leader. It was entirely his personal discretion.”
