Attack on Nur was planned and targeted: Rizvi

BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has claimed that the violent assault on Nurul Haque Nur, president of the Gono Odhikar Parishad and former DUCSU Vice President, was a pre-planned and deliberate attempt on his life.
Rizvi made the remarks on Sunday afternoon after visiting Nur, who is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
“This was not an ordinary incident. It was a targeted and well-planned attack. The intention was clearly to kill him,” Rizvi told reporters. “Had the injuries been just a bit more severe, we might have been mourning him today. Nur has faced attacks 22 times already — from Bogura to other districts — and each time the ruling regime has looked the other way.”
Rizvi rejected suggestions that Nur or his organization instigated any violence during the events leading up to the attack on Friday.
“There was no provocation from Nur. He did not engage in any violence. Yet his office was attacked. This reflects a pattern — a systematic effort by the authoritarian regime to crush dissent,” he said.
He linked the incident to broader political tactics aimed at silencing opposition voices, referencing “the defeated forces of August 5” whom he accused of “injecting poison into the country’s politics in different forms.”
In response to questions about possible involvement of Jatiya Party leader GM Quader, Rizvi said he could not confirm any direct role, but criticized Quader’s political legitimacy.
“I don’t know if GM Quader was involved. But it’s strange — someone who went abroad before the election and claimed that no political move can happen without foreign permission, is now lecturing on Bangladesh’s politics. How is that acceptable? These are people re-emerging from the shadows to exploit the situation.”
When asked whether the BNP supports the People’s Rights Council’s call to ban the Jatiya Party, Rizvi said the matter would be decided internally.
“The party will make a decision on that. I have no comment at this time,” he said.
