Election Commissioner Md. Anwarul Islam Sarkar has said that the upcoming national parliamentary election will be the most high-risk in the country’s history, emphasizing that ensuring a free and fair process is now more critical than ever.
Speaking at a training event organized by the Election Training Institute at Agargaon in Dhaka on Friday (August 29), Anwarul stressed the importance of maintaining integrity and transparency in every aspect of the electoral process.
“There is no alternative but to return home with the credibility of a fair election,” he said. “If the election fails to meet expectations, the burden of responsibility will fall not just on the Election Commission, but on every official involved. Even if lives are at stake, we cannot allow any irregularities or fraud.”
He identified the upcoming general election as the greatest challenge currently facing the Election Commission. “This election carries more risk than any previous one. The only way forward is to overcome all obstacles and ensure it is fair and acceptable to the people,” he added.
Commissioner Anwarul also called on all officials and stakeholders to remain vigilant and committed to upholding the electoral code of conduct, stating unequivocally: “There will be zero tolerance for manipulation or misconduct.”
At the same event, Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah expressed optimism about voter engagement. “We may see greater voter turnout than expected. Even our expatriate citizens are showing keen interest in participating.”
Other commissioners echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the need for strict oversight to prevent irregularities. They also recommended that the election be conducted in an economical but efficient manner, balancing cost with accountability.
