A court in Dhaka has registered an attempted murder case naming 98 individuals; among them, ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The case was filed by Mushfiqur Rahman Abir, a BNP activist, who accused the defendants of a brutal assault during a campaign event in December 2022.
According to the complaint lodged with Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court by Magistrate Zakir Hossain, Abir was assaulted—slapped, punched and rendered unconscious—on Kalabagan Lake Circus Road No. 1 while returning home.
He was then locked inside a tannery warehouse in Hazaribagh and held for ransom. The assailants demanded Tk 10 lakh, accepted Tk 5 lakh from his father and released Abir the following morning.
The lawsuit alleges that the attackers were linked to then-Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation, Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh.
Just two days later, on December 7, Abir participated in another rally at Naya Paltan. That event descended into violence when allegedly supporters of Awami League and its student and youth wings attacked the assembly with tear gas and batons, causing chaos.
Abir was wounded in the incident and received medical treatment at Kakrail Islami Bank Central Hospital between December 7 and 13.
Upon his return to Kalabagan, Abir claims his home was vandalized and he was tortured and detained at Kalabagan police station.
During his detention, law enforcement reportedly demanded a large sum from his father in exchange for release. Although a remand petition filed by the police was rejected by the court, Abir remained in jail for 22 days before being granted bail.
Also named in the case are several high-profile figures, including former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud, former DB chief Muhammad Harun or Rashid, former DMP Joint Commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarkar and former MP of Dhaka-10 constituency, Shafiul Islam.
The court has directed Paltan Police Station to proceed with the case.
