Real Madrid’s newest prodigy Franco Mastantuono has caused a stir with his first official words as a Madridista; by calling Lionel Messi the best footballer in the world.
Mastantuono, who signed a six-year deal with Real Madrid last month after arriving from River Plate, was officially presented at Santiago Bernabéu on Thursday, coinciding with his 18th birthday.
Touted by many as a future superstar for the Spanish giants, the young Argentine midfielder’s glowing praise of Messi has already sparked reactions across the football world.
Known for their historic rivalry, Real Madrid and Barcelona have long been bitter enemies, with players from either side rarely offering public praise for one another.
Against this backdrop, Mastantuono’s admiration for the Barcelona legend stands out; especially coming at his unveiling press conference.
When asked to name the best footballer in the world, Mastantuono didn’t hesitate.
“For me, the best player in the world is Messi. I’m Argentine, and in my eyes, he’s the greatest,” he said, without reservation.
The bold statement is already being seen as a rare act of honesty and courage, considering the often hostile reaction Madrid fans have had toward praise for Barcelona icons.
In the past, Real Madrid players who acknowledged Messi or any Barça player have faced backlash and even threats from segments of the fanbase.
During the press conference, Mastantuono also shared his excitement at joining the club, describing the move as a childhood dream come true.
He spoke about his ambitions at Madrid and reflected on the legacy of Argentine players at the club.
“I’ve followed a few Argentine players who have played for Real Madrid. Of course, I never saw Alfredo Di Stéfano play, but I’ve watched Di María and Higuaín a lot. Their style of play really impressed me,” he said.
While his football talent has already begun turning heads, Mastantuono’s public praise for Messi; especially on his first day as a Real Madrid player, has added a bold new chapter to the long-running Barça-Madrid rivalry.
