Paris Saint-Germain began the new season with silverware, claiming the UEFA Super Cup for the first time in club history after a dramatic 4-3 win on penalties against Tottenham Hotspur in Udine, Italy, on Wednesday.
The match had finished 2-2 after regular time, with PSG mounting a late comeback to deny Spurs victory.
Tottenham, under new head coach Thomas Frank, looked on course for a dream start as they took a 2-0 lead. Micky van de Ven opened the scoring in the 39th minute, and Cristian Romero doubled the advantage early in the second half.
However, PSG fought back late. Substitute Lee Kang-in pulled one back in the 85th minute, and Goncalo Ramos equalised in the 94th with a header, forcing a shootout.
The penalty shootout began poorly for PSG as Vitinha missed, but new goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier — making his debut after joining from Lille — saved Van de Ven’s effort, and Mathys Tel missed the target for Spurs. PSG converted through Ramos, Ousmane Dembele, Lee, and finally Nuno Mendes, who netted the decisive kick.
Spurs converted through Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Pedro Porro, but it wasn’t enough to secure the trophy.
“It’s the perfect start to our season,” said PSG captain Marquinhos. “We didn’t have much preparation, but we showed the mental strength and tactical discipline needed.”
The win gives PSG their fifth trophy of 2025 and marks the first time a French club has won the UEFA Super Cup. The victory also comes just a month after they lost the FIFA Club World Cup final to Chelsea.
Spurs, despite the loss, showed promise under Frank, who praised his side’s performance. “We had them where we wanted them for 80 minutes. It’s unfortunate, but penalties are always a coin flip,” he told TNT Sports.
The match also featured several debuts: Mohammed Kudus and Joao Palhinha started for Spurs, while PSG’s Chevalier replaced Gianluigi Donnarumma in goal. The 23-year-old impressed despite conceding twice, making key saves throughout the match.
PSG kick off their Ligue 1 campaign on Sunday against Nantes, while Tottenham host Burnley in their Premier League opener on Saturday.
