Harry Brook and Joe Root both struck superb centuries to put England within touching distance of a series-clinching win, before late wickets and rain brought high drama to the fourth day of the fifth and final Test against India at The Oval.
England closed on 339-6, needing just 35 more runs to chase down a challenging target of 374, but India remain firmly in contention, needing four wickets to level the series 2-2.
After slipping to 106-3 with the dismissal of stand-in captain Ollie Pope, Yorkshire teammates Brook (111) and Root (105) revived England’s hopes with a crucial 195-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
Brook’s aggressive innings, including 27 runs in just eight balls and a remarkable six over cover off Akash Deep, turned the momentum. However, his departure sparked a collapse that saw England lose three wickets for 36 runs, including Root, who was caught behind after completing his 39th Test century.
Play was halted due to bad light with Jamie Smith unbeaten on 2 and Jamie Overton yet to score, before a heavy downpour ensured no further action on Sunday.
Root described the match as an “amazing spectacle” and said the dramatic finish was fitting given the nature of the series so far.
India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel acknowledged the frustration of the weather interruption but remained focused on his team’s task ahead.
England are attempting to pull off what would be the highest successful fourth-innings run chase at The Oval, surpassing the 263 they made to beat Australia by one wicket in 1902.
Their current chase follows their impressive pursuit of 371 in the series opener at Headingley, underlining their attacking approach under coach Brendon McCullum and injured skipper Ben Stokes.
Brook’s century came off just 91 balls and featured 12 fours and two sixes. His innings ended in dramatic fashion when he lost his bat mid-swing and was caught at mid-off.
Root’s ton came after the tea break, taking 137 balls. England briefly stumbled late in the day when Jacob Bethell was bowled attempting a rash shot and Root edged behind soon after.
With Woakes nursing a shoulder injury but expected to bat if necessary, all eyes now turn to Monday’s final day, with a thrilling finish on the cards.
