Bangladesh receives green signal from US on tariff: Commerce secy

Bangladesh has given a green signal from the United States on reducing the 35 per cent reciprocal tariffs, said Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman after a high-level meeting.
He came up with this information on Wednesday morning through WhatsApp after the first day of the third round of trade talks with the United States inWashington.
”We had a fruitful discussion with the US on July 29 and we have received a signal from officials of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) that the tariffs imposed on Bangladesh will be reduced,” Mahbubur Rahman added.
“Our tariffs will be reduced significantly. But it is not confirmed exactly by how much the percentage. We have also meetings today and tomorrow. Hope that something favourable will happen for Bangladesh.”
The first day’s tariff talks began between the high-levels of both the countries around 10:30 PM (local time) and continued till 3:30AM.
Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin headed the meeting where National Security Adviser Dr Khalilur Rahman, Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman and Additional Secretary Dr Nazneen Kawshar Chowdhury were also present.
Meanwhile, the US delegation is headed by Assistant Trade Representative Brendan Lynch, accompanied by trade and tariff officials.
Earlier, the US announced to impose 35 per cent tariff on Bangladeshi goods, effective from August 1.
