In a rain-disrupted match stretched across two grounds and nearly five hours, Bangladesh U-20 women’s football team secured a dominant 4-1 victory over Bhutan in the SAFF U-20 Women’s Championship on Tuesday.
With this win, Bangladesh topped the round-robin standings with three consecutive wins.
The game began at Bashundhara Kings Arena at 3 PM, but persistent rainfall made the pitch unplayable after the first half.
The remainder of the match was relocated to Kings Arena training ground, with play finally concluding around 7:45 PM.
Despite the weather, Bangladesh managed to lead 1-0 at halftime.
The opening goal came in the 6th minute when Trishna Rani’s shot was parried by the Bhutanese goalkeeper but not cleared. Shanti Mardi capitalized and slotted the rebound into the net.
Bhutan stunned Bangladesh early in the second half with a goal in the 53rd minute to level the score.
But the home side responded strongly. Just four minutes later, Shanti Mardi headed in her second goal from a corner. Substitute Munkhi Akter added a brilliant solo goal in the 76th minute and Mardi completed her hat-trick three minutes later.
With three straight wins, Bangladesh now sits atop the points table in the round-robin format of the tournament, showing strong form ahead of the knockout rounds.
