Cricketer Nasir Hossain and his wife Tamima Sultana Tammi on Monday pleaded not guilty in a case filed over the alleged unlawful marriage of Tamima.
Appearing before Dhaka’s Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Zakir Hossain, the couple denied the charges and sought justice. The day was set for the couple’s statements under Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), where accused persons respond to the evidence brought against them.
Plaintiff Rakib Hasan, Tamima’s former husband, was also present in court. After reading out the charges and testimonies of ten prosecution witnesses, the judge asked the couple whether they were guilty. They responded by claiming innocence.
The court then inquired if the accused would produce defense witnesses. Their lawyer informed the court that both Nasir and Tamima would submit written statements and testify on the next scheduled date, along with additional defense witnesses.
The court fixed August 11 for recording defense testimony.
Case Background
On February 24, 2021, Rakib Hasan filed the case, alleging that his wife Tamima married Nasir without divorcing him. Following an investigation, PBI submitted a report on September 30, 2021, accusing Nasir, Tamima, and her mother Sumi Akter.
On January 24, 2022, the court formally charged Nasir and Tamima, but discharged Tamima’s mother. Later, both the defense and the plaintiff filed revision petitions. On February 28, 2023, Dhaka’s Sixth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge rejected both revisions, upholding the charges against Nasir and Tamima and maintaining the discharge of Tamima’s mother.
The court concluded witness hearings on April 16 this year, after recording testimonies from ten prosecution witnesses.
