Anisul Huq on 2-day remand in arms case

Published: 07 July 2025, 3:12:00

A Dhaka court on Monday granted a two-day remand for former Law Minister Anisul Huq in connection with an arms case filed under the Arms Act at Banani Police Station.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Minhazur Rahman issued the remand order after police produced Anisul Huq in court and sought a five-day remand for further investigation. After the hearing, the court approved two days for questioning.

The information was confirmed by SI Moktar Hossain of Banani Police Station’s general registration wing.

According to the case details, Anisul legally owned a licensed pistol registered under his name. The Ministry of Home Affairs had suspended all private firearm licenses issued for personal security from January 6, 2009, to August 5, 2024, instructing license holders to deposit their weapons by September 3, 2024.

However, Huq failed to deposit his licensed weapon or notify the authorities between September 4, 2024, and May 5, 2025. Police reports state that efforts to contact him at his registered address were unsuccessful, and no records of ammunition purchases were found.

As a result, police filed the case under Section 19(1) of the Arms Act of 1878.
