Bangladesh faces 77-run defeat against Sri Lanka

Published: 03 July 2025, 2:41:34

Bangladesh suffered a dramatic middle order batting collapse, losing seven wickets just for five runs after a steady start, ultimately falling to a 77-run defeat against Sri Lanka in the first ODI in Colombo.

From 100 for one wicket, tigers stumbled to 105/8, losing seven wickets for just five runs; a collapse that sealed their fate.

There was no coming back from the disaster, and the innings eventually folded for just 167 runs in 35.5 overs, handing Sri Lanka a comfortable 77-run win and a 1-0 lead in the series.

Earlier, Sri Lanka posted a competitive total of 244 runs, getting bowled out in 49.2 overs after electing to bat first.

The star of the innings was Charith Asalanka, who anchored the side with a composed 106-run knock.

Bangladesh’s bowling effort was decent, but the batters failed to back it up. After a solid start to the chase, the middle and lower order crumbled under pressure, allowing Sri Lanka to dominate the match completely.

The series now moves ahead with Bangladesh needing a strong response to keep their hopes alive.
