Marcos Leonardo scored twice, including a dramatic rebound goal in the 112th minute, as Al Hilal upset Manchester City 4-3 on Monday to knock the English champions out of the Club World Cup in the round of 16.
In a pulsating encounter at Camping World Stadium, the Saudi side led three times, twice in extra time. Kalidou Koulibaly made it 3-2 in the 94th minute, but Phil Foden equalized in the 104th shortly after coming on. Leonardo’s winner came after a save from Ederson deflected into his path, allowing him to score while falling near the post.
Earlier, Leonardo also scored in the 46th minute to cancel out Bernardo Silva’s opener. Malcom restored Al Hilal’s lead in the 52nd before Erling Haaland responded quickly to level again.
Manchester City nearly snatched a win in stoppage time, but a late penalty appeal was waved off, prompting manager Pep Guardiola to confront officials at the final whistle.
Al Hilal will now face Fluminense, who defeated Inter Milan earlier, in the quarterfinals on July 4.
