Aug 8 declared as ‘New Bangladesh Day’, July 16 as Martyr Abu Sayeed Day

Published: 26 June 2025, 2:52:26

The government has declared August 5 as ‘July Uprising Day’ and August 8 as ‘New Bangladesh Day,’ commemorating key events in the country’s recent history.

Meanwhile, July 16 has been announced as Martyr Abu Sayeed Day in remembrance of the student who was killed in police firing in Rangpur during the mass movement.

The Cabinet Division issued separate circulars on Wednesday (June 25).

August 8 marks the day when the interim government was formed following the overthrow of the previous government amid a mass uprising by students and the public.

A 36-member national committee was formed to oversee the observance of mass uprising days in July and August, marking the anniversary of last year’s student-led movement.

Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus will serve as the chairperson of the committee.

The 36-day long programme will be celebrated from July 1 to August 5 to mark the anniversary of the July Uprising.
