BNP, Communist Party of China hold high-level talks in Beijing

Published: 25 June 2025, 2:47:48

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the Communist Party of China (CPC) have launched a round of high-level bilateral discussions in Beijing, signaling efforts to strengthen party-to-party and broader bilateral ties.

The talks, held in a “cordial and constructive” atmosphere, were confirmed by Shairul Kabir Khan, a member of the BNP’s media cell, who spoke to reporters in the Chinese capital.

According to Khan, the Chinese side expressed strong interest in working with Bangladesh’s next government and conveyed hopes for a free, fair, and inclusive general election. “They are eager to strengthen ties and expand cooperation once a new government is in place,” he said.

Leading the BNP delegation, Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir emphasized Bangladesh’s need for sustained Chinese support in critical sectors such as agriculture, industry, textiles, healthcare, and infrastructure. He also called on China to take steps toward reducing the trade imbalance, promoting technology transfer, and enhancing technical capacity-building in Bangladesh.

The formal bilateral meeting took place Monday at the Great Hall of the People, where the BNP delegation was received by Li Hongzhong, member of the CPC Politburo and Vice Chair of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress.

Li welcomed the BNP team warmly and extended an official invitation to BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman to visit China at a mutually convenient time. He expressed optimism that relations between the two parties—and between China and Bangladesh—would continue to deepen and reach “new strategic heights.”

In response, Fakhrul commended China’s constructive role in regional and global affairs, and advocated for expanding such diplomatic and developmental engagement through multilateral platforms to ensure broader regional benefits.

The BNP delegation’s visit is seen as part of a broader diplomatic push as Bangladesh prepares for its next general election amid a shifting political landscape.
