UN delegation lauds Bangladesh’s steps on enforced disappearances

Published: 16 June 2025, 7:13:48

A visiting delegation from the United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID) on Monday praised the interim government of Bangladesh for taking significant steps to address the issue of enforced disappearances.

The delegation, comprising WGEID Vice-Chairperson Grażyna Baranowska and member Ana Lorena Delgadillo Perez, specifically welcomed Bangladesh’s accession to the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (ICPPED). They also commended the work and commitment of the Commission of Inquiry (COI) on Enforced Disappearances.

The UN officials met with Acting Foreign Secretary Md Ruhul Alam Siddique at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where they discussed ongoing efforts and areas of cooperation. The delegation is on a study visit to Bangladesh from June 15 to 19.

During the meeting, the WGEID representatives expressed interest in exploring how their mandate could further support the government in preventing and addressing enforced or involuntary disappearances.

The Acting Foreign Secretary reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding human rights and delivering justice to victims. He welcomed the Group’s technical assistance and support in advancing this process.
