Gold prices surge again on Eid-ul-Azha eve

Published: 08 June 2025, 1:22:43

On the eve of Eid-ul-Azha, the Bangladesh Jewellers’ Association (BAJUS) announced on Thursday that the price of gold has been raised by up to Tk 2,415 per bhori (11.664 grams), effective from Friday (June 6).

Following the latest revision, the price of 22-carat gold—the highest quality available in the local market—now stands at Tk 1,72,336 per bhori. This marks a significant increase from the previous rate, set on May 22.

The price hike was decided in a meeting of the BAJUS Standing Committee on Pricing and Price Monitoring, held on Thursday.

BAJUS attributed the increase to rising prices of “tejaabi” or refined gold in the local market. “The new rates reflect adjustments based on raw gold prices,” said a BAJUS spokesperson.

Prices for other gold categories have also risen— 21-carat gold: up by Tk 2,297 to Tk 1,64,497 per bhori, 18-carat gold: up by Tk 1,971 to Tk 1,40,994 per bhori, traditional method gold: up by Tk 1,691 to Tk 1,16,640 per bhori.

Silver prices remain unchanged, BAJUS confirmed.

This marks the second gold price hike in just two weeks, placing an added burden on consumers preparing for Eid festivities. Jewelry sellers expect some slowdown in purchases due to the abrupt spike, but many say loyal customers are likely to go ahead with planned buys.

“We anticipated some adjustments, but a raise just before Eid is tough for buyers,” said Rafiq Hossain, a jeweler in Dhaka’s New Market.
