13 dead, 92 hurt amid heavy rains across Punjab

Published: 25 May 2025, 3:34:07

At least 13 people have been killed and 92 others injured during heavy rainfall across Pakistan’s Punjab province, according to reports in the local media.

Lahore accounted for three of the deaths and Jhelum two, while Rawalpindi, Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Sialkot, Mianwali, Layyah, and Jhang each reported one fatality, Pakistani newspaper Dawn reports, citing Punjab’s Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).

In Lahore, the deaths occurred due to wall collapses and lightning strikes during the storm on Saturday. Six others were also injured in related incidents.

Two people died in similar circumstances in Jhelum. Another 32 people were injured, some of them struck by flying solar panels.

In Rawalpindi, one person was killed and 11 others, including a child, were injured when a wall collapsed during a lightning storm.

Most of the casualties across the province were caused by wall collapses and lightning strikes amid the heavy downpour.

In Murree, two people were injured when a vehicle skidded off the road during the rain.

Meanwhile, in Sheikhupura, the roof of a local factory caved in during the storm, killing one worker and injuring five others. The victims were rescued from the debris and taken to Sheikhupura District Hospital.

A PDMA report detailed the destruction caused by the storm across Punjab. Many people were injured or killed because they took shelter in unsafe structures. Several mud-built and old, fragile houses collapsed under the impact of the storm and heavy rain.

In Lahore, trees were uprooted and many solar panels were damaged. Large parts of southern Punjab experienced power outages during the storm.

On Sunday, the PDMA urged authorities and residents across Punjab to remain on high alert, warning that more heavy rain and storms could affect several districts in the coming days.
