Bangladeshi Shakil conquers everest from sea level, sets global milestone

A young Bangladeshi mountaineer, Ikramul Haque Shakil, has etched his name into the global record books by becoming the youngest person to trek from sea level to the summit of Mount Everest, breaking a long-standing world record.
The record-setting expedition, titled “Sea to Summit”, saw Shakil walk an estimated 1,300 kilometers from Inani Beach in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh all the way to the top of the world — Everest’s 8,848-meter (29,031 feet) peak — in just under 90 days.
His achievement was confirmed in a Facebook post on Monday by Sadia Sultana Shampa, coordinator of Bangla Mountaineering and Trekking Club (BMTC), via Shakil’s official page “Ikramul Hasan Shakil”. She stated that Shakil successfully reached the summit and returned safely to Camp 4.
However, due to communication limitations, further details — including the exact summit time and the size of his support team — are yet to be confirmed.
Shakil’s extraordinary journey began on February 25 from the shores of the Bay of Bengal. From there, he trekked through Bangladesh, India, and Nepal, covering some of the most challenging and remote terrain in the region.
In doing so, Shakil shattered the previous record set by Australian climber Tim Macartney-Snape, who in 1990 hiked approximately 1,200 kilometers from Ganga Sagar in India to Everest’s summit over the course of 96 days. Shakil not only walked an additional 100 kilometers, but did so in roughly a week less.
This historic feat marks a new chapter not just for Bangladesh’s mountaineering community, but for the world — as Shakil becomes a global symbol of endurance, ambition, and youthful determination.
