Biman flight lands safely after losing wheel

Published: 16 May 2025, 5:45:55

A Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight carrying 71 passengers, including a child, made a safe emergency landing at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Friday afternoon after one of its rear wheels detached shortly after takeoff from Cox’s Bazar.

The airline’s General Manager (Public Relations), ABM Rowshon Kabir, confirmed the matter.

A major accident was narrowly avoided on Friday when Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG 436, en route from Cox’s Bazar to Dhaka, lost one of its rear wheels shortly after takeoff.

Despite the potentially dangerous situation, the aircraft landed safely at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 2:22 PM, with all 71 passengers on board, including a child, reported safe and uninjured.

The Dash 8-Q400 aircraft took off from Cox’s Bazar Airport at 1:20 PM. Shortly after becoming airborne, the pilot, Captain Billah, informed Dhaka Air Traffic Control (ATC) that the plane needed to make an emergency landing due to a technical issue.

In response, emergency protocols were activated at Dhaka airport, including the deployment of fire service units and an engineering team positioned by the runway.

“Our engineering team was on standby in Dhaka and the pilot managed a safe landing on the first attempt,” said airline’s General Manager (Public Relations), ABM Rowshon Kabir.

Aircraft specialists from the airline noted that the plane was capable of landing safely even with one rear wheel missing, though the risk required emergency handling.
