Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes took another hit on Saturday after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Brentford at the Emirates Stadium, a result that edges Liverpool closer to the crown.
Following their midweek Champions League triumph over Real Madrid, the Gunners looked flat for much of the game and failed to build on their lead after Thomas Partey’s 64th-minute opener, which was set up brilliantly by Declan Rice.
Brentford’s Yoane Wissa equalised in the 74th minute with a sharp finish from a set piece, capitalising on a lapse in Arsenal’s defence; an increasingly familiar theme this season.
Mikel Arteta’s side had an early goal from Kieran Tierney ruled out by VAR and never quite regained momentum. Despite dominating possession, Arsenal couldn’t find a winner and have now dropped 16 points from winning positions this season; just one fewer than the total from the last two campaigns combined.
The draw leaves Arsenal second, 10 points behind league leaders Liverpool, who still have a game in hand and host struggling West Ham on Sunday. Brentford, meanwhile, climb to 11th with a resilient display.
Arteta admitted his side “weren’t good enough,” and hinted that the focus may now be shifting toward the Champions League second leg in Madrid.
Brentford manager Thomas Frank praised his team’s fighting spirit and the character shown in battling back to earn a point against a title contender.
With the season entering its final stretch, Arsenal’s margin for error continues to shrink and Liverpool’s grip on the title grows stronger.
