A court in Dhaka has acquitted film actor Ananta Jalil and five others from all charges in a fraud case.
Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sanaullah passed this order on Sunday (February 23).
The other acquitted individuals are Jahanara Begum, Managing Director of Polo Composite Knit Industries Limited; Md Sharif Hossain, Finance Director; Sakibul Islam, Assistant Manager; Md Milon, Senior Merchandiser; and Shahidul Islam, Head of Budget and Audit.
On this day, the accused were scheduled to appear in the court for a hearing. However, the plaintiff businessman Shafil Nawaz Chowdhury, informed the court that the dispute had been settled amicably between the parties. He subsequently filed a petition to withdraw the case.
After reviewing the circumstances, the court granted the petition and acquitted all the accused.
On December 24, 2023, businessman Shafil Nawaz Chowdhury, in favour of M/S Stitch and Color Technology, filed the case at the Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka. Following an investigation, Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) Inspector Taposh Chandra Pandit submitted a report to the court on November 23, 2023, confirming allegations under Sections 406 and 420 of the Penal Code.
According to the case details, on October 17, 2022, the accused placed an order for garment-related work with Shafil Nawaz Chowdhury on behalf of Polo Composite Knit Industries Limited. The plaintiff started the assigned tasks and requested for payment, to which the accused assured him that the payment would be made through a Letter of Credit (LC). Additional work orders were given, and by March 2023, all work was completed and handed over to the accused.
On March 15, 2023, the accused issued an LC in favor of Shafil at Mercantile Bank. However, when he attempted to withdraw the funds, he was unable to do so due to discrepancies in the LC documentation. Despite fulfilling contracts worth approximately $29200, the company, owned by Ananta Jalil, had not made any payments.
Following the settlement between the parties, the court, after reviewing all aspects, decided to withdraw the case and acquit the accused individuals.
