Several cities in Saudi Arabia affected by torrential rains and unprecedented flooding

Published: 09 January 2025, 5:49:18

Saudi Arabia is currently grappling with torrential rains and unprecedented flooding that have submerged streets and neighborhoods across multiple cities in the kingdom, according to various media reports.

This weather phenomenon, triggered by an atmospheric depression, is expected to persist in the coming days.
On Tuesday, the National Meteorology Center issued alerts at various levels throughout the kingdom, including a high red alert for the holy cities of Mecca and Medina in western Saudi Arabia, as well as several regions in the eastern part of the country.

The capital, Riyadh, located in the central region, along with the southern provinces of Aseer and Jazan, has been placed under an orange alert, indicating lesser severity.

Nevertheless, authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant due to the anticipated rainfall.

In response to these warnings, relief organizations, including the Red Crescent Authority, have ramped up their preparedness efforts to address the heavy rains.

According to the Saudi Press Agency, the Red Crescent has confirmed the full mobilization of its rescue teams to ensure the continuity of ambulance services and facilitate rapid interventions.

Saudi authorities have also advised citizens to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines, particularly in areas under high-level alerts.

The Civil Defense service has recommended that the public avoid valleys, low-lying areas, and locations where rainwater may accumulate.

Videos circulating on social media depict the extent of the flooding: submerged roads, vehicles swept away by rising waters, and buildings inundated following the torrential rains and storms.
