Appellate Division of Supreme Court on Sunday upheld the High Court verdict that earlier acquitted BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman in four extortion cases.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by senior Justice Md Ashfaqul Iskam, passed this order rejecting the leave to appeal petition of the state.
Additional Attorney General Barrister Anik represented the state.
On October 23, a High Court bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain had cancelled the four cases filed against Tarique Rahman.
The state has filed a leave to appeal against this ruling.
The High Court cancelled the four extortion cases filed against Tarique Rahman during the state-supported caretaker government in 2007.
In 2007, several people filed extortion cases against the BNP’s acting chairman with Gulshan, Kafrul, Shahbagh and Dhanmondi police stations.
