At least 30 individuals were injured and 10 others sustained bullet injuries in a clash between two groups in Sunamganj’s Dirai upazila over territorial dominance.
The incident occurred in Rarail village of Kulanj union on Tuesday evening.
The gunshot victims, including individuals aged between 23 and 65, are Muhibur Rahman Chowdhury, Anju Chowdhury, Sohel Chowdhury, Juel Chowdhury, Akmal Chowdhury, Konor Chowdhury, Shubho Chowdhury, Islam Uddin Chowdhury, Javed Chowdhury, and Tasim Chowdhury. They were referred to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
According to police and local sources, tensions had been escalating between two rival groups led by Anu Mia Chowdhury and Nanu Mia Chowdhury on one side and Jasim Uddin Chowdhury and Sumon Chowdhury on the other. The dispute stems from a long-standing dispute over establishing supremacy in the village.
The conflict intensified after police visited the village earlier in the day to investigate a case filed by Anu Chowdhury. Following the police’s departure, tensions boiled over, culminating in a violent clash in the evening.
Dirai Police Station officer-in-charge Abdur Razzak confirmed the incident, saying, “The conflict resulted in multiple injuries, including gunshot wounds. We are conducting operations to recover firearms and apprehend the perpetrators.”
Dr. Prashanta Das of Dirai Upazila Health Complex reported, “Ten individuals with gunshot wounds were brought to us. They have been transferred to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for further care.”
