BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called upon the interim government to create an atmosphere for the next general election in the country as quickly as possible.
He also strongly criticised the remarks of an adviser for his remarks that “politicians have become a little bit intolerant to go to power.”
Mirza Fakhrul was speaking at a discussion organised in observance of the 5th death anniversary of undivided Dhaka city’s former mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka at Engineers Institution Auditorium at Ramna in the capital on Sunday, November 3, 2024.
Dhaka City South organised the discussion.
Taking part in the discussion, the BNP Secretary General said: “We have been freed from the clutches of a dreadful monster. A heavy stone has got down from our chests. Though the stone has gone away, we are yet to have a sigh of relief. We have stuck at somewhere else. Our dream of the government of the people is yet to be materialised.”
Mentioning that the interim government took responsibility to overcome crises, Mirza Fakhrul said, “Your (Dr Muhammad Yunus) reputation has spread around the world. Now, your major task is to uphold your reputation. You have been given the responsibility to return democracy to people of Bangladesh. It means that you will have to hand over power to an elected parliament and government through holding a free and fair general election acceptable to all.”
Criticising the remarks of an adviser and without mentioning his name, Mirza Fakhrul said, “He (adviser) said politicians have become a little bit intolerant to go to power. It is very unfortunate. We don’t expect that such a person can make this remark. We politicians don’t become intolerant to go to power. We have struggled to free Bangladesh from Hasina. We have laid down our lives. Now, we are trying to establish democracy in the country.”
The BNP Secretary General also explained why they were seeking election “as early as possible.”
He said as much as you delay, Hasinas would come back again. “So, I request you to create a congenial atmosphere convenient to ellection. Remove all the garbage. You have been given the responsibility. We are always cooperating with you. You also cooperate. Please don’t say that we have become intolerant to go to power.”
Without mentioning the name of anyone else, Mirza Fakhrul said, “Don’t try to do anything else to exclude BNP through conspiracy once again. People of Bangladesh will never accept it. Once efforts were made to depoliticise BNP through “minus two.” Don’t try to think to go through that road again.”
Addressing the party leaders and workers, the BNP Secretary General said, “Don’t try to do anything else so that anyone speaks raising fingers at the party. Don’t do that and don’t allow anyone to do that. Please, remember this all the time.”
Moderated by the BNP Dhaka City South member secretary Tanvir Ahmed, the discussion was also participated by Chairperson’s adviser Abdus Salam, Sadeque Hossain Khoka’s son and BNP’s international affairs committee member Ishraque Hossain. among others.
It was presided over by Dhaka City South BNP convener Rafiqul Alam.
