7 pro-BNP lawyers acquitted, petitioner fined Tk 1,00,000

Published: 03 November 2024, 2:54:33

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Sunday acquitted seven pro-BNP lawyers from contempt of court charge.

A four-member Appellate Division bench, headed by chief justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, passed this order.

Meanwhile, the court fined petitioner SC lawyer Nazmul Huda Tk 1 lakh as he was not present in the court. This money will have to be donated to July Smriti Foundation within three weeks.

On August 29, 2023, Nazmul Huda submitted a contempt of court petition to the apex court praying to draw contempt of court proceedings against the seven lawyers and to punish them for their comments about the two SC judges at a press conference held on the Supreme Court Bar Association premises on August 27.

Among the seven lawyers, Adv AJ Mohammad Ali expired last month.

Other six lawyers are Md Kayser Kamal, Fahima Nasrin Munni, Md Abdul Jabbar Bhuiyan, Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal, Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman Khan and Gazi Kamrul Islam Sajal.
