Metro rail operations resume, bring relief to office commuters

Published: 25 August 2024, 1:29:18

Metro rail resumed operations on Sunday after remaining suspended for over a month.

But Kazipara and Mirpur-10 stations, which were damaged during the recent unrest, will remain closed.

The first train started from Uttara North Metro Station at 7:10am and the first train from Motijheel departed at 7:30am.

The regular commuters of metro rail, especially the office commuters, were relieved to resume the metro trains.

Earlier, the trial runs of metro rail were conducted on Thursday and Friday. However, no problem or fault was detected on the lines, said Additional Project Director (Electrical, Signal,Telecommunication and Track) Md Zakaria.

The DTMCL authorities also released a time-table signed by Deputy Project Director (Public Relations) Tarafder Mahmudur Rahman.

The metro rail operations were closed on July 18 when angry protesters set fire to a police box at Mirpur-10 roundabout during a “complete shutdown” of the Quota Reform Movement. The fire’s black smoke affected the metro rail, leading to a suspension of service at 5:30pm that day. The next day, July 19, the metro rail remained closed for the weekend. Later that afternoon, miscreants severely damaged the Kazipara and Mirpur 10 stations, which led to the prolonged closure of the metro rail service.
