UK Awami League commemorates National Mourning Day

The UK Awami League gathered peacefully in Altab Ali Park, Whitechapel, East London, on Thursday, 15 August, to solemnly observe the National Mourning Day, commemorating the martyrdom anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Despite threats and protests from the BNP Jamaat, the event proceeded with a strong call for peace and unity.

Under the leadership of President Sultan Shariff and General Secretary Syed Sajidur Rahman Faruk, thousands of UK Awami League supporters assembled in front of the Central Shahid Minar to pay their respects to the Father of the Nation. A sense of solemnity and dedication marked the rally, as participants from various Awami League-affiliated organisations, including Mohila League, Jubo League, Chhatra League, and Sechcha Sebak League, joined together in a united front.

Following the rally’s conclusion, the participants proceeded in a large procession towards Brick Lane, symbolising their commitment to upholding Bangabandhu’s legacy.

However, the peaceful commemoration was disrupted when leaders and activists of the BNP and its allied groups entered Altab Ali Park and engaged in hostile behaviour towards the Awami League members. The situation escalated when BNP activists began throwing eggs at the Awami League supporters, prompting law enforcement to intervene. Additional police forces were deployed in and around the park to prevent further clashes and ensure public safety.

Despite the provocation, UK Awami League leaders and activists adhered to the call for peace and in its commitment to honouring Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s legacy and will continue to advocate for peace and unity in the face of adversity.
