‘Don’t joke with nation by feeding people at DB office dining table’

Published: 29 July 2024, 10:21:51

The High Court has commented that ‘Don’t joke with the nation by taking people to the DB office and sitting them on the dinner table’.

A bench consisting of Justice Mostafa Zaman Islam and Justice SM Masud Hossain Dolan made this comment on Monday (July 29) addressing the state side in the hearing of the writ petition filed seeking a direction not to shoot at the students during the protest.

Additional Attorney General Md Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury told the court, ‘The coordinators of the movement have been taken into custody to provide security. They were seen having lunch on TV. This picture of them eating with fork spoons at DB office has been published.’

In view of this, the High Court bench of Justice Mostafa Zaman Islam and Justice SM Masud Hossain Dolan said, ‘Don’t joke with the nation. Who told you to do this? Why did you do these? You cannot detain people and sit them on dining table.’

Two Supreme Court lawyers on Monday filed a writ with the High Court seeking its directive for authorities to stop firing on students during agitation.

Lawyers Manzur Alam Motin Pritam and Ainunnahar Siddiqa Lipy submitted the writ petition with the court this morning.

It also sought immediate release of the six coordinators from the custody of the Detective Branch of police.

Secretaries of the cabinet and the home ministry, the inspector general of police, the chief of Bangladesh Amy and other relevant officials have been made the respondents.

Earlier, on Sunday (July 28), Additional Commissioner of Police (DB) Harun-or-Rashid posted a few photos on Facebook sitting at a table having breakfast with six coordinators.

In the caption of the pictures, Harun wrote, ‘The coordinators of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, the platform of the quota reform movement, were suffering from insecurity. So I brought them to DB office and talked to them.’
