Man dies in Habiganj police custody, investigation underway

Faruque Mia, who was arrested on Sunday night, died on Sunday after being rushed to a hospital from the Sadar police station’s custody in Habiganj.
Sources said, a police patrol team led by Sub-inspector Jewel Sarker, made a drive to Mohonpur area and arrested Faruque over a case regarding a dishonoured cheque.
Locals alleged after being tortured by the police, Faruque was left in a critical condition and had to be rushed to the Sadar Hospital’s emergency room, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
After his death, angry locals staged a demo and besiege the hospital premises. Along with other officials, Superintendent of police (SP) Mohammad Ullah came to the hospital, and brought the situation under control by assuring the mob that they are investigating the matter and would take punitive measures if the police were responsible for Faruque’s demise.
Masuk Mia, son of the deceased alleged that Faruque died being tortured by the police and said: “The police were torturing my father since his arrest. They didn’t even allow me to meet him.”
However, Masuk Ali, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Habiganj Sadar police station denied his allegations and said: “The deceased, Faruque was not tortured. While questioning he suddenly fell ill and died of a heart attack after being taken to the hospital.”
Dr Mithun Roy, the on-duty doctor of Habiganj Sadar Hospital, said: “Faruque had some wound marks on his body. However, we can only be sure of the reason behind his death after the autopsy.”
