Dhaka, June 23 : The ruling Awami League has been leading Bangladesh towards development and prosperity, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said Sunday.

“Bangladesh has been marching towards socioeconomic development after the Awami League came to power,” she said on the party’s 70th founding.

Since its founding on June 23, 1949, the party has been playing leading role in all democratic movements. Bangalees fought in the Liberation War in 1971 under the leadership of Father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and won independence.

Bangabandhu was assassinated on August 15, 1975 while the four national leaders – Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmed, Captain M Mansur Ali and AHM Qamruzzaman – were killed inside the Dhaka Central Jail on November 3 that year.

Sheikh Hasina said that the country is moving forward and has attained its glory that was lost through the killing of the Father of the Nation.

She said that the Awami League always gives to the nation and the country.

“It’s our commitment on this day that we’ll build the hunger and poverty free, developed and prosperous golden Bangladesh which was the dream of the Father of the Nation,” the Prime Minister said.

Marking the party’s founding anniversary, Sheikh Hasina placed a wreath at the portrait of Bangabandhu at Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi-32 in the morning. She stood in solemn silence for some time as a mark of respect to the memory of Bangabandhu.

Later, the ruling party president placed another wreath at Bangabandhu’s portrait as the party chief. She then hoisted the national flag and party flag with the national anthem and released pigeons and balloons.
