Probe committee formed over DNCC market fire

Fire Service and Civil Defence authorities said a probe committee has been formed over the devastating fire that gutted the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) market in Gulshan-1.

“A five-member committee has been formed over the fire incident at the DNCC market,” said Major AKM Shakil Nawaz, director (Operation and Maintenance) of the fire service.

The committee is headed by fire service Deputy Director Shamim Ahsan Chowdhury.

The body is directed to submit a probe report within the next seven days.

“We had earlier informed the market authority to take measures for ensuring fire safety, as we had found this complex risky. However, the authorities filed a writ against us,” Major Shakil said.

The Fire Service also called off the rescue operation.

The fire broke out around 5:48 am. A total of 20 units of Fire Service went to the spot and brought the blaze under control at 8:25 am.

The fire was extinguished by 9:30am.
