Sri Lankan national dies in Banani fire

A Sri Lankan citizen died as he jumped off a high-rise building in the capital’s Banani area to escape fire at the building on Thursday afternoon.

The deceased has been identified as Niras Chandra.

He was rushed to Kurmitola General Hospital as he sustained serious injuries after jumping off the building. However, he died on the way, said the hospital’s Director Brig Gen Qazi Rashid un Nabi.

A total of seven people died so far and at least 30 others were injured in the deadly fire at 17-storey FR Tower in Banani.

However, the conditions of the injured victims are not serious, said Rashid un Nabi adding that most of them are suffering from breathing complications as they inhaled the smoke.

A burnt victim has been referred to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital’s burn unit for better treatment, the director said.
