The High Court on Sunday (Dec 3) ordered authorities concerned to pay Tk 4.61 crore as compensation to the family of filmmaker Tareque Masud who was killed in a road crash in 2011.
An HC bench of Justice Zinat Ara and Justice Qazi Md. Ijarul Haque Akond passed the order after holding hearing in the case filed by Tareque Masud’s family members.
Barrister Sara Hossain, lawyer of Tareque Masud’s family, confirmed the matter to reporters.
She said, “A long legal battle has ended Sunday. Deceased’s wife Catherine Masud, son Nishad Masud and mother Nurunnahar Begum filed the case. Sunday the HC gave its verdict. Court ordered to pay Tk 4,61,75,452 to the family as compensation within three months. The driver will have to pay Tk 30lakh, Insurance company to pay Tk 80,000 and the owners to pay the rest amount.”
The trial of the case started in High Court on Aug 13 in 2016. Tareque Masud’s wife Catherine asked for Tk 7,76,25,452 as compensation in the testimony.
On February 13, 2013, the family members of the deceased sued two cases for compensation against bus owners, driver and Insurance Company under Section 128 of Motor Vehicle Ordinance in Manikganj.
On August 13, 2011, five people, including filmmaker Tarek Masud and ATN News’s CEO (CEO) Mishuk Munir, were killed in a sudden road crash on the Dhaka-Aricha highway in Joka area of Ghior Upazila
Later, police filed a case over this accident.
