Veteran community leader Barrister Ashek Ali passed away

Veteran community leader and the first British-Bangladeshi Councillor Ashek Ali passed away.  He died in London on Tuesday 4th April, aged 83.

He left behind one son, three daughters, nine grand children and many well wishers. He is grandfather of BBC Asian Network presenter Nadia Ali.

His Namaz-e-janaza was held at East London Mosque on 5th April and was attended by family members, friend and wellwishiers.

He was the first elected Bangladeshi councillor in Tower Hamlets. He was a lifelong Labour Party member and was also the first Bangladeshi awarded ‘Freedom of the Borough of Tower Hamlets.’

He was one of the key initiators to encourage the inception of Markaz mosque  many other mosques in London. He also built one of the first Bangla community centre in the UK.

He devoted his life in community work and dedicated his time to social work and has helped many people with his knowledge and work.  The footsteps he took are an inspiration to many.
