Dual Citizenship Law contradictory to expatriate rights

759ebbad-ad2c-4251-8ce6-e85c223e599aThe speakers at a round-tabel meeting at East Lonodn urged all community members to protest against the proposed Dual Citizenship Law 2016.  The speakers mentioned this law as damaging and detrimental for the Bangladeshi people who are living abroad.  If the law passes in Bangladesh Parliament, if a person becomes a dual citizen of another country, his Bangladeshi nationality will be invalid.  He would then need to apply again to re-claim his Bangladeshi citizenship assenting the terms and conditions of Bangladesh Government.

The draft also quotes that if a Bangladeshi couple gives birth to a child in a foreign country, and they do not register the birth with the Bangladesh mission there within two years of the birth, the child will not be given citizenship.  

Dual Citizenship Law in Bangladesh and expatriate’s rights, the round table discussion meeting in Montefiore Centre, was presided over by Chief of News Department of Chanel S.  Senior News Presenter of Channel S and community activist Dr Jaki Rezwana Anwar conducted the meeting where Barrister Nazrul Khasru read out the main essay.

Community activists and professionals who attended the meeting expressed their frustration on this proposed law and mentioned that this law lacks natural justice. They also mentioned the law as contradictory to expatriate’s rights and welfare.

They also said that in today’s world other modern governments are taking initiatives to give more rights to people who emigrated from their motherland.  On the other hand, Bangladeshi government is taking initiatives to limit the rights and privileges of expatriates. The speakers also mentioned that if this law is passed, the second and third generations will lose touch from their ancestry land and lose the right to claim their property rights.

Barrister Nazir Ahmed expressed his gratitude to all who attended the meeting.
