Sabina welcomes Stepney Green win

unnamedNewly elected councillor for Stepney Green, Sabina Akhtar, made a heartfelt speech as she was duly elected to serve the ward on June 11.

Ms Akhtar, representing the Labour Party, received 1,643 votes, closely followed by the Independent candidate Abu Talha Chowdhury with 1,472 votes.

She said: “I am overwhelmed and so happy. I would never have made it without my campaign team who have done a great job. I believe I can work hard to tackle the issues in the ward and am grateful for being given the chance to prove myself.

“I am looking forward to the challenges and working with residents to improve the quality of life for all.”

The turnout was over 47 per cent and the electorate was 8,316.

The by election was held due to the election court judgement in April which saw the former mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman disbarred from his role alongside former councillor Alibor Choudhury who represented Stepney Green ward.
