Tulip Siddiq wins!

Ansar Ahmed Ullah :: Tulip Siddiq the grand daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and Sheikh Rehana’s eldest daughter won Hampstead and Kilburn seat defending a majority of just 42 in the seat formerly held by the famous actress Glenda Jackson.

She received 23,977 votes, 44%, beating her near rival Conservative Party’s Simon Marcus who got 22,839, 42% of the votes. Tulip Siddiq lives in West Hampstead with her husband Chris Percy. Her parents were married in the nearby Kilburn area some forty years ago. She spent her weekends campaigning since she was sixteen, fighting to save local hospitals, fire stations and post offices.

Tulip Siddiq was previously a local councillor and Cabinet Member for Culture and Communities in Camden council. She also oversaw Camden’s engagement with the 2012 London Olympics, which saw the launch of three legacy schemes to encourage more physical activities, Camden Sports Academy, School and Community Games, and Pro-Active Ambassadors.

She had spent some of her early childhood in Asia, where she saw first-hand the impact that poverty can have on people’s life chances. It made her determined to help the most vulnerable and fight for social mobility. In addition her early work at Amnesty International gave her an opportunity to see these values in action.

Prior to becoming Labour’s candidate here, she most recently worked for Brunswick Group LLP in corporate social responsibility, working with major

British manufacturers and transport companies to strengthen their use of apprenticeship schemes and build on links with local communities and schools.
