Get fit for free in our parks

Residents are invited to sign up for free group exercise classes in six of the borough’s parks.
The Our Parks scheme will be running until October 20 offering the chance to take part in a number of different exercises to improve health and wellbeing.
Residents can log on to the website and book hour-long sessions led by qualified instructors at three different levels. Green offers residents a gentle or light workout, blue classes are light to moderate with black – the hardest – being moderate to intense training.
Parks involved in the scheme include Mile End Park, Victoria Park, Bethnal Green Gardens, Millwall Park, Stepney Green Park and King Edward Memorial Park.
The Our Parks initiative comes to the borough following a successful pilot programme supported by the leisure team in Waltham Forest. All classes are funded by the council to encourage residents to be more active.
Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman, said: “The health of our residents is always important to us so we fully welcome Our Parks to the borough. It offers a great opportunity for participants to exercise for free with professional instructors. Running over a two-month period, we would like to encourage everyone at all levels of fitness to take part.”
Cllr Shafiqul Haque, cabinet member for culture added: “We are always looking at ways to make services more accessible. By offering free sessions in wonderful settings there is no excuse to give it a go.”
Classes include box fit, circuits, pilates, yoga and dance fit.
Residents have taken to Twitter to voice their appreciation of the classes.
William Hughes said: “Excellent AthleFit circuit class in Bethnal Green Garden with Born Barikor. Very tough. I’ll definitely be back!”
Paul Keating added: “Lucky to live in East London where Our parks provide free classes. Victoria Park last night gave me my yoga fix.”
