The Election Commission (EC) has instructed the Bangladesh Bank (BB) to issue orders to stop mobile banking services to prevent influence of money on voters.
According to the order, mobile banking services will remain closed from 5pm on Friday to 5pm Sunday, the voting day.
The Bangladesh Bank issued a notice in this regard on Thursday.
Serajul Islam, a spokesperson of the central bank, said that they issued the order to restrict mobile banking for a limited period as requested by the EC.
According to the order, neither mobile banking agents nor personal account holders will be able to transact any money for the first 24 hours of the ban.
The order, however, says that personal account holders can transact up to Tk 5,000 from 5pm on Saturday until the end of voting at 5pm on Sunday.
The EC’s request followed a proposal by the Awami League to halt mobile banking during the election.
Meanwhile, customers swarmed the banks on Thursday to draw money before four days of holidays.
