Sylhet Office : The water level in Surma River suddenly rose due to incessant rainfall for last several days and onrush of water from hilly areas.
Sources at Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said water level of Surma was flowing above the danger level in three points, inundating many low-lying areas.
According to the control room of the BWDB, the water level of Surma was flowing 13.39 cm above the danger level in Kanaighat area while 10.44 cm in Jakiganj and 14.83 cm in Amalshid points at 6 pm on Wednesday.
Earlier on Tuesday, the water level in Surma was flowing 12.95 cm above the danger level in Kanaighat area while 10.21 cm in Sylhet and 14.33 cm in Amalshid points.
However, the water level of Kushiara River was still flowing under the danger mark on Wednesday evening, according to the control room.
Meanwhile, the residents of the district have started to fear for an immanent flood as Met office forecasts heavy rainfall for the next 24-48 hours.
