Sylhet court orders confiscation of 10 fugitives’ wealth

Sylhet Office : A court here on Wednesday ordered authorities to confiscate all the properties of 10 fugitives in a case over an attack on two journalists – one from a private television channel and the other with a national daily.

Judge Mamunur Rahman Siddique of Sylhet Metropolitan Magistrate court -1 declared the verdict in the presence of four of the accused in the case who are currently out on bail, but for the first time the judge referred to the 10 that have gone into hiding as ‘fugitives’.

The accused were identified as Nazrul Islam, Jewell Arman, Nuruddin, MZ Jahangir Tofail Ahmed, Sayed Raju, Faruk Ahmed, Sabbir Ahmed, Monir Mia, Taj Uddin, Hossain Ahmed, Sultan Ahmed, Shamim Ahmed and Nurul Islam of different village in Jaintiapur upazila.

According to the prosecution, Jamuna television cameraperson Niranando Paul and national daily Jugantor photojournalist Mamun Hasan fell victim to attack in court premises on January 25.

Soon after the attack, Niranando Paul fielded a case against Liakat Ali, Foiez Ahmed Babar and 14 others unknown persons with Kotwali Police Station under speedy trial.

On February 13, a charge sheet was submitted to chief metropolitan magistrate court excluding Liakat Ali, Foized Ahmed Babar, Shamim Ahmed and Md Hossain Ahmed.

Later, the case was given to the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) for proper investigation.
