Labour Party Councillor Ayas Miah has become the Speaker of Tower Hamlets. He was elected as the Speaker after Labour party won the landslide victory in Local Government election held on 3rd May. His election process as Speaker took place on 23rd May in a full council meeting at Mulberry Place.
Expressing his reaction as Speaker, he mentioned that He would work tirelessly to showcase the achievements of Bangladeshi community and will work hard for the advancement of the community. He expressed his gratitude to the Mayor of Tower Hamlets John Bigss and all members of the community especially those who elected him in the local government election on 3rd of May. He also emphasised that his job will include promoting Tower Hamlets, alleviating the differences between council and its residents and representing the Borough as its ambassador.
Rushanara Ali MP and Jim Fitzpatric MP were present at the in ceremony with other distinguished members of the community at the election process. Departing Speaker Cllr Sabina Akter acted as the Speaker for the first part of the session.
Ayas Miah was elected as council in last local government election and worked as the Cabinet Member for Environment and Waste Management. He also acted as the Deputy Speaker.
Ayas Miah’s is from Dhorarai village (Mollah Bari) of Doshghar Union of Bishawanath Upozilla in Sylhet and son of Mohammod Abul Hossain. He passed his SSC from Deokolosh High scholl and came to London afterwards. He has established and working as the Prinicipal Accountant of A M Accountants after receiving higher degree in Accounting.
An Iftar and Dinner party took place to mark the Speaker election process. Guests who were present at the Iftar Mahfil and dinner Party included the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Cabinet members, Councillors, Journalists, Distinguised members of community, political leaders and council officers.
Politicians of Bangladeshi origin have been acted as Speaker of Tower Hamlet since 2014. Cllr Abdul Mukit MBE acted as Speaker in 2014-2015 sessions, former Councillor Khalis Uddin in 2015-16, Cllr Sabina Aktar in 2017-2018 session and Ayas Miah will be acting as the Speaker for 2018-2019 sessions.
